The Story
Why are these properties available?
We're happy beach dwellers here on South Whidbey, but a few years ago, during our "first retirement" experience, we realized that we needed more "space". A larger garage and place for a garden.
This began our quest for property to build a workshop and "guest house" to accommodate our dreams. We were just looking for 5 acres - and thought we'd found it a few times, but we were consistently out-bid. We had no idea how hot the real estate market on South Whidbey had become.
Then, one afternoon, our agent sent us a listing for a 73+ acre property on Saratoga Rd. She stated that she knew it was more than we were looking for, but she knew the property and we should at least take a look.
The next day, we had an early lunch in Langley and decided to drive up the road to take a look. We walked this massive piece of forest land and fell in love! It was more than we wanted, but felt like home. Plus, we couldn't deny the benefit of being nestled next to 600+ acres of the protected trails and forest of the Putney Woods and the Metcalf Land Trust.
Now here we are! We've selected the space we'll keep for our workshop and future retirement. We've planted our mini-orchard and are looking forward to enjoying this wonderful, peaceful space.
We decided to put the additional land that we really didn't need in the first place on the market. However, in planning, there needed to be a true road that allowed for not only access to the properties, but also a turn-around, without losing the valuable asset of being rural forest land.
We worked closely with our architect Eric Richmond, and also our builder Tanner McInerney, who worked with the WA DNR, to craft the best path to creating a usable road while maintaining the integrity of the rural forest.
They helped us with planned building and well sites, as well as ensuring that each parcel had conduit in place for power & fiber (1 GIG internet) to the property line. (Power & Fiber available at the street.) Transforming what was the existing trails into a private road & putting the infrastructure in place for power will make it as easy as possible for our new neighbors to build their dream homes in this private and pristine sanctuary!
It took years, but just as December of 2023 came to a close, the new boundary line adjustments were finalized by Island County to allow for each available parcel to be 10+ acres, with a road to allow for easy, yet private, access.
